Thomas Hulmann is Partner and Deputy Head of the Regulatory & Compliance Financial Services division at Grant Thornton Switzerland/Liechtenstein in Zurich.

Professional experience

Prior to joining Grant Thornton Switzerland/Liechtenstein, Thomas Hulmann worked in the Regulatory & Compliance Financial Services department of a consulting and auditing firm in Zurich for 10 years and before that as an attorney at a Zurich commercial law firm and as a clerk at the Zurich District Court.

Thomas Hulmann specialises in Swiss and international financial market law and in operational tax compliance for financial institutions (automatic exchange of information, FATCA, QI).

Professional qualifications and memberships

Thomas Hulmann has a Master’s degree in Law (MLaw) from the University of Fribourg and was admitted to the bar in 2011.

Languages

In addition to his native German, Thomas Hulmann also speaks fluent English, French and Spanish.

With Revenue Procedure 2022-43, the US tax authority IRS published the new Qualified Intermediary (QI) Agreement in December 2022. All Qualified Intermediaries – i.e. the vast majority of banks and securities firms – have until 1 May 2023 to convert their existing QI Agreement into the new version on the electronic IRS portal.
